Orange Blossom Trail Project receives $68,300 grant
A $68,300 ship finally came in for the Orange Blossom Trail. On the third submission, the Redlands Rail Trail Project has received a major grant from CalTrans for design and engineering of the Orange Blossom Trail.
According to Project Chair Karen Arnstein, the money will pay for the design of the whole route, from California Street to Opal.
The Orange Blossom Trail will utilize the active and abandoned rail beds that run through the heart of town. Where that is impractical, the trail will travel on flood control easements. One small portion along the historic zanja is already completed next to ESRI.
Once the design is completed, the project committee will know how much money the actual construction will cost.
Noting that these projects, especially where they run through an urban area, are very expensive, Arnstein said the most expensive part of the construction will be making safe crossings of the major north-south roads, such as Alabama, Tennessee, and Orange Street. Working with the national Rail to Trail Conservancy, the Redlands project will be able to design a safe and efficient system.
Mayor Harrison and Arnstein have been working on this project for more than three years, and the Redlands Conservancy adopted it as a subcommittee in 2004.
