City Kids Go Outdoors program connects Redlands’ kids with Redlands’ wild places – The next adventure starts OCTOBER 1!
Redlands Conservancy’s City Kids Go Outdoors (CKGO) program started in 2013 with a mission to connect Redlands’ wild places with Redlands’ underserved youth. The mission is to build a cadre of young people who will care about and steward the natural open spaces as they learn more about themselves.
The program brings kids to San Timoteo Nature Sanctuary in Redlands for two different experiences: Adventures and Safaris.
Each ADVENTURE is a two or three-day session on consecutive Saturday mornings, each featuring a specific topic. Click here for the brochure!
Adventure 1, October 1 and 8, 9am to noon – “Wildlife in Redlands’ Wild Places,” will help adventurers know who’s out there and how the critters live. Adventure 1 will include hands-on activities on site at San Timoteo Nature Sanctuary where the participants will read animal signs, locate animal dwellings, and think like an animal thinks.
Adventure 2, November 5 and 19, 9am to noon – “Plants or Animals: Which comes first?” will ask participants to explore the plants that grow naturally in the wild, understand how non-native plants cause big problems, and experiment with ways to help native plants grow more vigorously. The right way to collect seeds will be a big piece of the activities, and participants will plan for and plant wildflower seedbeds at the sanctuary.
All of the Adventures are taught by California credentialed teachers and
assisted by volunteers from the University of Redlands. The curriculum supports the California Curriculum Standards.
Each SAFARI, still in the planning stages, will be a three-day program held on consecutive weekdays during kids’ holiday breaks, and will allow participants to more completely comprehend the human impact on wild places.
Who: Kids in the Redlands area, ages 10-18. Must have a curious spirit and a willingness to try new things and take chances. 20 kids per session.
Cost: $10 for each session – all the Cost is refunded at the end of the session if the participant attends all activities.
